What Is the Best Treatment for Sun Damage and Dark Spots?

Living in Florida has its perks.

Beautiful weather. Outdoor activities. Sunshine almost year-round.

But eventually, all that sunshine can start showing up on our skin.

Brown spots, uneven pigmentation, dullness, rough texture and changes in skin tone are some of the most common concerns I see—especially as we get older.

One of the questions clients frequently ask me is:

“What's the best treatment for sun damage and dark spots?”

The answer isn't necessarily one particular peel, product or procedure.

First, we need to understand what kind of pigmentation we're actually treating.

Because not every brown spot is the same.

What Does Sun Damage Look Like?

Years of ultraviolet exposure can create visible changes in the skin, sometimes long after the exposure occurred.

Sun-damaged skin may appear:

  • Uneven or blotchy

  • Dull

  • Rough in texture

  • Dry or dehydrated

  • Freckled or spotted

  • Less firm than it once was

You may also notice areas of discoloration becoming more obvious with age.

That's one reason someone can suddenly feel like their skin has changed dramatically—even though some of that damage accumulated gradually over many years.

Are All Dark Spots Caused by the Sun?

No.

And this is extremely important.

Hyperpigmentation simply means an area of skin has become darker than the surrounding skin. There can be multiple causes.

Sun exposure is one.

Pigmentation can also occur following inflammation, acne or injury to the skin. Hormonal influences can contribute to certain pigmentation patterns as well.

And some spots should not be treated cosmetically until they've been evaluated by a medical professional.

If I see a pigmented lesion that concerns me or has characteristics that warrant medical evaluation, I'm going to recommend that you see a dermatologist rather than attempting to treat it.

Knowing what not to treat is part of responsible skincare.

Can Chemical Peels Help With Sun Damage?

For the right client, professional chemical peels can be very useful for improving the appearance of uneven pigmentation, dullness and sun-damaged texture.

But “chemical peel” is a broad category.

Different acids and formulations work differently, and the strongest peel isn't automatically the best peel.

I consider your skin type, current skin condition, pigmentation, previous treatments, lifestyle and the amount of downtime you're comfortable with before deciding what makes sense.

Sometimes a series of appropriately selected treatments produces a much better experience than aggressively treating the skin all at once.

Can PRX Plus Help With Pigmentation and Sun-Damaged Skin?

PRX Plus is another treatment I may consider when pigmentation, dullness and overall skin quality are concerns.

One of the things clients appreciate about PRX Plus is that it provides a biostimulating approach without the visible peeling and downtime traditionally associated with many resurfacing treatments.

For someone who wants to improve the appearance of aging, sun-exposed skin but doesn't want several days of obvious peeling, this can make PRX Plus particularly appealing.

It may also be incorporated into a larger treatment plan rather than viewed as a one-time solution.

What About BioRePeel?

BioRePeel can also be considered when we're addressing concerns such as uneven texture, dullness and discoloration.

Like PRX Plus, it appeals to many clients because there is typically less visible downtime than people associate with traditional peeling treatments.

But BioRePeel and PRX Plus aren't interchangeable.

They have different formulations and may be selected for different reasons.

This is why I prefer to start with:

“What are we trying to improve?”

rather than:

“Which peel is trending right now?”

Can Microneedling Help Sun-Damaged Skin?

For appropriate candidates, microneedling may be part of a plan for improving overall skin quality, texture and age-related changes associated with cumulative sun exposure.

However, pigmentation requires thoughtful treatment.

More inflammation isn't always better, particularly in skin prone to certain types of hyperpigmentation.

I've been performing microneedling for over a decade, and treatment depth and intensity are never something I believe should be approached with a one-size-fits-all mentality.

Your skin history matters.

Your pigmentation matters.

And your response to inflammation matters.

What Skincare Ingredients Help With Dark Spots?

Professional treatments are only part of a pigmentation plan.

What you do at home matters tremendously.

Depending on the individual, a home-care plan may include ingredients designed to support more even-looking skin, antioxidants, appropriate exfoliation and ingredients that help regulate the appearance of excess pigmentation.

But there's one product that matters regardless of which corrective products you're using:

Sunscreen.

If we're spending time and money trying to improve sun-related discoloration while continuing to expose the skin to ultraviolet radiation without adequate protection, we're working against ourselves.

Can I Get Rid of Sun Damage Without Wearing Sunscreen Every Day?

This is probably not the answer everyone wants.

But realistically?

Sun protection needs to be part of the plan.

That doesn't mean you need to hide indoors.

I'm an avid mountain biker, so I understand wanting to enjoy an active outdoor lifestyle.

My philosophy isn't avoiding life to protect your skin.

It's protecting your skin while you're living it.

That means appropriate sunscreen, reapplication when needed, hats and other protective measures—especially here in Florida.

Why Do My Dark Spots Keep Coming Back?

Pigmentation can be stubborn.

Professional treatments may improve its appearance, but if the factors triggering pigmentation continue, discoloration can return or become more noticeable again.

Sun exposure is an obvious example.

Inflammation can also play a role in certain types of pigmentation.

That's why I prefer thinking about hyperpigmentation as something we manage strategically rather than promising that one treatment will permanently erase every spot.

Realistic expectations matter.

Should I Use Strong Acids at Home to Remove Dark Spots?

Be careful with this.

When people become frustrated with pigmentation, it's tempting to use more acids, stronger retinoids and multiple brightening products simultaneously.

But irritating your skin doesn't necessarily make pigmentation disappear faster.

In some people, excessive inflammation can actually make discoloration more difficult to manage.

And if you've already compromised your skin barrier, aggressive home treatment may need to stop before corrective skincare continues.

Healthy skin first. Corrective skincare second.

What Is the Best Treatment for My Hyperpigmentation?

It depends on the cause, your skin and your goals.

For one person, I may recommend a professional chemical peel.

For another, PRX Plus may make more sense.

Someone else may benefit from BioRePeel, microneedling, targeted professional skincare—or a combination of approaches over time.

And occasionally, my recommendation will be:

See your dermatologist first.

That's why I don't believe choosing a treatment should begin with a menu.

It should begin with your skin.
